Polyester can be physically or chemically changed to "wick" moisture. Because the nature of synthetic fiber is to repel moisture, it becomes an effective moisture management tool when made to wick. Evaporation can take place more quickly if the wicking is also quick. Because the moisture is spread over larger areas it will naturally be a thinner layer and therefor will more readily evaporate.

Compare the traits of wicking synthetics to cotton and you will see the synthetics will be superior in moisture management and thermal control. Why? Because the cotton will absorb water like a sponge and it will not evaporate quickly. Cotton causes you to stay wet and uncomfortable. Cotton will hold up to eight times it's weight in water. Polyester, even with wicking will only hold a fraction of that amount.
